Choosing the Right Indoor Playground Equipment

If you’re planning an indoor playground in the USA, choosing the right equipment is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. From multi-level play structures and toddler areas to interactive attractions, every element needs to work for your space, your audience and the demands of a commercial environment.

This guide explains what to consider when choosing indoor playground equipment for a US venue, including design, age groups, safety standards, accessibility, shipping and installation.

Whether you’re opening a family entertainment center, adding soft play to an existing business or expanding an established venue, choosing the right manufacturer can have a major impact on your project.

Why Your Manufacturer Choice Matters

Investing in a commercial play center is a huge step for any business. Whether you run a daycare, restaurant, or family entertainment center, you need equipment that protects children and supports your business.

However, turning a blank commercial building into a successful venue takes more than simply filling a room with toys. It requires careful planning, creative design and the right equipment for your audience.

Choosing the right indoor playground equipment can help you make better use of your available space, accommodate different age groups and create an experience that encourages families to return.

For businesses looking at commercial indoor play in the USA, finding the right manufacturer is therefore one of the most important decisions you will make.

What to Look for in an Indoor Playground Manufacturer

The manufacturer you choose affects the quality, design, materials, installation and long term support of your play space.

Cheap, off the shelf play systems can be tempting when you’re working with a budget. However, cutting corners on commercial play equipment can create problems later, particularly when equipment needs frequent repairs or fails to meet the requirements of your venue.

Choosing high quality indoor playground equipment can give you:

  • Total Transparency: We manufacture every part in house, using certified high quality materials.
  • Reduced Downtime: Heavy duty structural parts and durable materials mean fewer repairs and less disruption to your business.
  • A Strong Brand Image: A professionally designed venue gives your business a high-end appearance and helps you stand out from local competitors.
  • A Bespoke Experience: We can design your equipment around your available space, rather than forcing your building into a standard layout.

What to Consider When Choosing Indoor Playground Equipment

Consideration Why it matters
Available space Determines layout and equipment capacity
Ceiling height Affects multi-level structures
Target age groups Helps determine equipment and zoning
Expected footfall Influences durability requirements
Accessibility Should be considered during planning
Theme and branding Helps create a cohesive visitor experience
Budget Determines equipment, finishes and features
Installation Affects project timelines and logistics
Maintenance Important for long-term operation

From Your First Idea to the Final Design

The process starts with your ideas and your vision.

You share what you want to achieve with your playground, the type of customers you want to attract and the space you have available. From there, you’ll receive guidance and support tailored to your project, including advice on budgets, layouts and timelines.

Once you have chosen your space, we focus on creating bespoke design plans and cost estimates.

It presents the LED arrow lighting, the color scheme (purple, green and pink) and the different features the softplay will have such as the numerous slides.

Your goals, vision and needs are at the heart of the design process. Using measurements, photographs and information about your venue, we can create detailed 3D designs of your indoor playground equipment.

This allows you to visualise how your finished play area could look before manufacturing begins.

More importantly, it gives you the opportunity to make changes early in the process. We will refine the design with you until you are completely satisfied with the final concept.

That means you’re not simply buying commercial indoor play equipment. You are creating an experience that is designed specifically for your business.

Navigating US Safety Standards

Safety is one of the most important considerations when buying commercial play areas.

American buyers need to follow strict guidelines to protect children and ensure that their equipment is safe and meets the correct standards.

The safety standards for American indoor playgrounds include ASTM F1487 and ASTM F1918. Both standards cover different aspects of indoor playground equipment, so it’s important to understand which requirements apply to your particular play environment.

Understanding ASTM Standards

Many American buyers have heard of the ASTM F1487 safety standard. It applies to open play equipment such as elevated decks and freestanding structures.

However, it doesn’t cover every type of indoor play environment.

Enclosed structures such as netted mazes, ball pits and multi-level play areas fall under the ASTM F1918 safety standard. This standard specifically addresses contained soft play environments.

Accessibility and Inclusive Play

Accessibility should be considered from the beginning of the design process. Depending on the venue and project, US accessibility requirements (ADA) may apply to elements such as accessible routes, entrances and play components.

Inclusive play is also an increasingly important consideration for indoor playgrounds. Features such as sensory rooms, wheelchair-accessible play areas and inclusive equipment can help your venue accommodate a wider range of children and families, including those with disabilities and additional accessibility needs. Building these considerations into the design from the start can create a more welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits.

Choosing the Right Play Equipment

Designing Your Indoor Playground around Different Ages

Every successful indoor playground needs to offer something that makes children want to explore.

Family entertainment centers (FECs) often thrive on immersive, multi activity concepts that provide different experiences for different age groups. Rather than creating one large area where every child plays together, dividing your space into distinct zones can make the venue easier to manage while improving the experience for visitors.

Here are some of the most popular areas to consider when planning commercial indoor play areas in the USA.

The Toddler Zone (Ages 0-5)

Toddlerzones provide a dedicate space for your youngest visitors.

Soft foam shapes, padded obstacles, low-level climbing features and ball pits allow little explorers to interact with their environment while developing confidence and motor skills.

For younger children, these areas are designed to provide a calmer experience for toddlers (and their parents!).

Keeping the toddler area separate from larger, more energetic children can also help create a safer and more comfortable environment.

This type of dedicated space can be particularly valuable for venues that want to attract parents with younger children, daycare groups and families with children of different ages.

Hunter’s Quest, found in Magherafelt, is a great example of a toddler zone. It sits beside the large play zone and allows the toddlers to play in a calm and safe environment away from the bigger kids.

Active Multi-level Structures (Ages 5-12)

This is the high energy area of your venue.

Multi-level indoor playground structures make excellent use of vertical space. Instead of spreading equipment across the entire floor, you can build upwards and create a much larger play experience within the same footprint.

Commercial indoor play equipment can include rope net bridges, climbing walls, padded obstacles, tunnels and different levels for children to explore.

The ultimate thrill can come from large tube slides, which can also act as a visual centerpiece for your business.

However, traditional soft play does not have to be the only attraction.

Interactive projection games can also be incorporated into an indoor playground. These systems project digital games onto walls or floors, turning part of your venue into a live, interactive experience.

For tech-savvy children, this combination of physical and digital play can add another reason to keep exploring.

Hybrid Attractions

Families love variety.

Combining traditional soft play with active sports elements can therefore be a great way to make your venue stand out from competitors.

Hybrid zones can also help attract older children and teenagers who may have started to outgrow a traditional indoor playground.

For example, you could incorporate a Ninja Warrior-style course or integrated indoor trampolines alongside your soft play structure.

This mix of traditional play and sports based activities gives older children more opportunities to challenge themselves. At the same time, it creates a varied experience for birthday parties and group bookings.

By offering several different activities within one venue, you can encourage visitors to spend longer in your facility and create a destination that appeals to more than one age group.

Ultimately, structuring your space into specialized areas helps toddlers play safely while keeping older, high energy children fully engaged.

Logistics: Shipping from the UK to the USA

You might be wondering how a UK indoor playground manufacturer delivers large commercial play structures across the Atlantic.

Fortunately, you don’t need to manage the process yourself.

At Play Creations, we work with you throughout the project to make shipping and delivery as simple as possible.

International Shipping and Logistics

We manage the ocean freight shipping and customs paperwork for you. This means you can stay focused on preparing your business rather than worrying about international logistics.

Before manufacturing begins, we also review your site plans and measurements one final time. That extra check helps us make sure everything is aligned before your equipment leaves our facility.

Secure Packaging

Large indoor playground equipment has to travel a long way to reach a US venue.

Our factory team carefully packages and securely wraps structural materials, interactive play equipment and soft pads to help prevent damage during transportation.

Agreed Timelines

We manufacture your indoor playground equipment according to the project timeline we agreed upon,  working around your business schedule wherever possible.

We understand that opening a new venue involves a lot of moving parts. Therefore, we stay in close communication throughout the process so you know what happens at each stage.

From production to shipping and delivery, our goal is to make the journey from our UK factory to your US venue as smooth and straightforward as possible.

Installation and Post-Launch Support

Your relationship with Play Creations doesn’t end once your equipment arrives.

We handle the entire setup process to ensure that your indoor playground is built correctly and ready for your business.

Our dedicated installation team can travel directly to your site in the USA, managing delivery planning and on-site logistics throughout the installation.

We understand that time is money, particularly when you are preparing to open a new commercial venue. As a result, we work flexibly around your schedule to help ensure a smooth and efficient installation.

Once our team completes the physical build, they conduct a full inspection to check every component of the finished playground.

However, installation is only part of our support.

Before handover, we provide your team with practical guidance on managing, cleaning and maintaining the equipment day to day, alongside safety inspection guidance and support with replacement parts or structural updates.

That ongoing support can make a significant difference to the long term success of your play center.

After all, your indoor playground is not simply an attraction. It is a major investment in your business.

With Play Creations as your manufacturing partner, you have access to expert support designed to help keep your commercial indoor play space running safely and smoothly for years to come.

How much does commercial indoor playground equipment cost in the USA?

Commercial indoor playground equipment costs vary all the time. There are so many different factors that come into play when figuring out the costs. Design, footprint, equipment, transport, installation all come into play.

A small daycare or cafe setup might start at $10,000, but a multi-level family entertainment center could range from $40,000 to well over $100,000. Buying from a manufacturer rather than a third party site can cut out the middle-man costs.

The USA safety standards include:
ASTM F1918 and ASTM 1487 are the correct standards.

The F1918 are the main standard for contained soft play equipment. Materials must also pass fire safety codes such as the NFPA 701. ADA compliance must also be met, which ensures that children of all abilities can play.

As a general rule of thumb, the differences between commercial and residential play equipment is:

Residential indoor playground equipment is lightweight and meant for single family use. They’re not made with the most durable equipment and won’t hold up with heavy use. They are suitable for individuals but not for extensive use.

Commercial indoor playground equipment is built using heavy duty steel, industrial grade foam and thick PVC vinyl to safely handle high traffic and daily use of hundreds of children. Commercial equipment also comes with longer warranties and meets the strict business insurance requirements.

We differ, as our Qube sets (which are designed for residential use), are made out of all the same materials that the commercial sets are. We don’t cut any corners, they’re designed to last. This is why we can also recommend them for businesses who need portable soft play.

Yes! We’re a made-to-order brand, so all of our custom indoor playgrounds are able to be designed, customised and themed to your space. Custom layouts are essential to make sure that businesses stand out and that all of your empty space is utilised.

Everything from the color schemes, to matching the company logo or even fully immersive themes like a jungle adventure or a minimalist aesthetic can be achieved. If you’ve got the idea, we can make it.

One of our favorite examples of this is the RAF Museum. Check it out!

This is very dependent on the scale of your indoor playground. For our UK clients we would usually say that our lead time is anywhere from 14-18 weeks but due to ocean freight and international shipping, this would be longer for our USA clients.

However, the international shipping logistics for the playground equipment is fully managed by our team of specialists which guarantees a smooth delivery right to your US venue.

We’ll keep you up-to-date throughout the entire process and do our absolute best to stick to your business timelines and goals.
